China targets uneconomic coal-fired capacity in three-year trial program

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Bloomberg:China is pursuing a three-year pilot program, led by five of its biggest utilities, to integrate and cut some coal-fired power capacity to help the debt-saddled industry, state media reported. The pilot, which runs through 2021, will seek to consolidate coal-power assets within five northwestern regions and reduce their capacity by up to one-third, according to Shanghai Securities News, citing sources it didn’t identify. The state-owned Assets Supervision & Administration Commission, which oversees the utilities, did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment. Calls went unanswered to the media offices of the five companies — China Huaneng Group Co., China Datang Corp., China Huadian Corp., State Power Investment Corp. and China Energy Investment Corp. The five firms had a combined 520 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity at the end of last year, according to the Shanghai Securities News report, adding that those coal power units had total combined liabilities of 1.1 trillion yuan ($156 billion) and assets worth 1.5 trillion. China’s coal plants are distributed across 30 provinces and territories, of which 15 saw losses in the coal and power business last year, according to the report.Coal plants nationwide ran at only 49% of their capacity during the third quarter, BloombergNEF analyst Hanyang Wei said in a report Tuesday, citing slower overall demand growth as the trade war with the U.S. impacts the economy, as well as competition from nuclear and hydropower. The plan to retire capacity is expected to boost profitability of some power companies, China International Capital Corp. analyst Liu Jiani said in a note. The entire industry could benefit if the program is extended to other provinces, Liu said.Under the trial program, each of the five state utilities will be tasked with leading asset consolidation and capacity reductions in one of the five provinces or territories: Huaneng in Gansu; Datang in Shaanxi; Huadian in Xinjiang; SPIC in Qinghai; and CEIC in Ningxia, the report said. The program could be expanded in the future, it added.More: China plans coal-power revamp to help ailing generators China targets uneconomic coal-fired capacity in three-year trial programlast_img read more

Giants take on Pablo Sandoval’s flashy style for flight to Philadelphia

How To Make Instant Petrified Wood

first_img“Want to petrify wood without waiting a few million years?  Try this,” EurekAlert teases.  The recipe: pick up some pine or poplar wood chips from your local lumber store, soak them in an acid bath for two days, then soak them in silica solution for two more.  Air dry, then put into argon-filled furnace at 1,400°C for two hours.  Let cool in argon to room temperature.  “Presto.  Instant petrified wood.”  The press release from the DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory states, “The acid-leaching method yields an identical, positive reproduction of the wood.”  One of the researchers concurs; it “replicates exactly the wood architecture.”    Nature, however, works much more slowly, according to the report:Yongsoon Shin and colleagues at the Department of Energy lab have converted wood to mineral, achieving in days what it takes nature millions of years to do in such places as the Gingko Petrified Forest, an hour up the Columbia River.  There, trees likely felled in a cataclysmic eruption and, buried without oxygen beneath lava, leached out their woody compounds and sponged up the soil’s minerals over the eons. (Emphasis added.)The article adds an interesting factoid about wood tissue.  “The intricate network of microchannels and pores in plant matter provide enormous surfaces—in wood, 1 gram of material flattened out would cover a football field,” it says.  Scientists are interested in creating ceramics that mimic these properties.  With instant petrified wood, they might be able to separate chemicals in the lab, or filter pollutants from escaping gas.A million years is an awful, awful, awful long time.  Think about everything that has transpired since the first record of human civilization: all the wars, natural disasters, climate changes, environmental and population shifts.  Now multiply that thought by a hundred – that is less than one million years, let alone 10 million or a hundred million.  Don’t you think in all that time, with all the volcanoes going off and continents drifting around, all the weathering and erosion, all the pressure and temperature changes, nature couldn’t figure out how to petrify wood a little faster, if we can do it in less than a week?  Why do you think this article claims it took millions of years?  Evidence?  … or maybe another reason?(Visited 4,498 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

JSE launches International Derivatives

first_imgThomson said that in the past, participating in international markets was an onerous process with complex administrative and approval requirements. Offshore investing Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material Expanded list 5 November 2008 IDX plans to expand by including additional markets and companies over time, with futures on select US and Asian stocks, available from the first quarter of 2009. SAinfo reporter “We will hopefully list further derivatives products according to market appetite and we believe there will be great demand for these investment opportunities,” he said. The JSE has partnered with Deutsche Bank to launch International Derivatives (IDX), a new asset class that allows South African investors to trade single stock futures on internationally listed companies for the first time. “This is a new landmark in trading for the JSE,” JSE trading head Allan Thomson said in a statement this week. “For the first time, local investors will be able to gain exposure to international companies without dealing with an offshore bank or broker.” Thomson pointed out that individuals and corporate investors would not have any exchange control restrictions when trading International Derivatives on the JSE, though the fund management industry would have to comply with their foreign portfolio allowances. JSE derivatives specialist Magnus de Wet said that investing offshore played an important role in building a diversified investment portfolio. “The international companies being listed include companies from the oil and gal, telecommunications and pharmaceutical sectors,” he said. “This allows South African investors to further diversify their portfolios internationally, and in different industries.” Deutsche Bank will provide liquidity on futures over 21 top European companies, selected from both the FTSE 100 and DJ Eurostoxx 50 benchmark indices. The companies include major multinational corporations such as BP, GlaxoSmithKline, LVMH, Nokia and Vodafone. “In contrast, International Derivatives contracts can be traded through a JSE registered broker in the same way you would purchase any local derivatives product.” “This is an exciting initiative which provides SA investors convenient access to foreign markets” said Deutsche Securities equities head Max Koep. The contracts are priced and settled in South African rands, meaning that investors will benefit if the rand depreciates – and as such, De Wet anticipated that discerning investors would use International Derivatives as a rand hedge.last_img read more

The Next Generation of Adobe Creative Cloud Is Now Available

first_imgAdobe has released their fall 2017 updates for Creative Cloud. Here are some of the new features that you can use to streamline your editing workflow.Images and Videos via Adobe. This morning, Adobe announced new features across the Creative Cloud. These new toolsets enhance your editing speed with easy-to-use graphics, Team Projects, and new VR compatibility.Adobe Team ProjectsThe Team Projects tool is now out of beta and fully released in both Premiere Pro and After Effects. You can now share one project file among multiple people. Use it to collaborate with your colleagues, and they can insert notes in the project file or make a few edits without having to manually move the project and its assets to a separate drive. The Team Projects tool also has an auto-save feature, which automatically saves all your edits and uploads them to the shared project file.Visit Adobe learn more about Team Projects.Multiple Open Projects — Premiere ProWe can finally open multiple projects at the same time. Now you can move clips and sequences between projects without importing the project file into separate projects. This is a huge update that we have been hoping for, and it is sure to help you organize your videos across multiple projects.Improved Graphics Workflows — Premiere ProThe graphics ingrained in Premiere Pro that we first saw a few updates ago have received a huge makeover. Adobe has introduced a new feature called Responsive Design, which adapts to a multitude of changes you might go through in an edit. Even when you shorten a graphic in a ripple edit, the entrance and exit keyframes automatically adjust to fit the new time duration. You can also apply the Responsive Design to Position, so your graphic assets will adjust to extra characters while maintaining the original composition.Title selection in your preview frame is no longer going to be a giant hassle. The previous graphics grabbing tools were a bit laggy and hard to use, but Adobe has fixed those and included the ability to select multiple text layers in the preview window.A big new feature is the ability to edit the properties of After Effects graphics and templates inside of Premiere Pro without even installing After Effects. This is huge for editors comfortable with Premiere Pro but not that familiar with After Effects. They can now use and edit After Effects graphics and assets natively in Premiere Pro.VR CompatibilityAdobe has added new VR features that gives you the tools to create truly immersive video. You can now use a VR headset to view your timeline in real-time while still using the keyboard to add markers or make cuts. This new view mode helps you ensure that the your VR video works well in practical application.Animating with Data and Expressions — After EffectsYou can now take data from a .JSON file and import it into After Effects to use for infographics or motion capture visualizations. When you update your data in the .JSON file, the infographics will automatically adjust to the new information. This is great for creating infographics with constantly changing data, so when you have to make adjustments to corporate budgets or a number of users for an upcoming meeting quickly, a simple replacement of the number in the .JSON file will update the infographic.Auto-Ducking — AuditionThis is the one new feature that really puts Adobe’s adaptive AI, Sensei, to work. The A.I. will automatically adjust your background music track where there is dialogue or other sound elements. To the editors who have gone through the painstaking task of manually pinning and lowering the music track to adjust for dialogue: this new feature is a gift from the Adobe gods. What took about 30 minutes to a few hours to do now only takes the A.I. a few minutes.Pricing and AvailabilityUnfortunately, the monthly price for Creative Cloud has been increased: it is now $52.99 for individuals and $79.99 for teams. The small price increase may be a bummer, but with all the new time-saving features and abilities, it looks well worth the price. The updates are currently available for download from your Creative Cloud app.Looking for more information on the Creative Cloud? The Real Reason Your Buyer is Deep Into the Buying Process

first_imgWant to know why your dream client is deep into their buying process when they decide to explore working with a new partner?Surprise! It’s not the Internet! If you think your dream client is spending their day on the Internet researching your product, service, or solution, you are incorrect. Your dream client is buried alive trying to produce the business results they are charged with producing. If you believe that your dream client is through the phase of the buying cycle where they begin to recognize their needs because they spent their day with their face all aglow from their laptop screen, you are mistaken. If you assume that they are deep into identifying the options available to them before they ever speak to a salesperson because the Internet replace the need for a salesperson, you are suffering from a delusion brought on by your spending too much time on the Internet and buying the hype. The primary reason your dream client is deep into the buying process when they decide to cast aside the status quo is because this isn’t the first time they have bought what you sell.First Time at the Rodeo . . . NotThe reason your dream client is so deep into the buying process when you happen upon them is because they have already purchased what it is that you sell. They have probably made the decision to buy more than once or twice. They know what they need because they have been using what you sell for a long time, and they believe they know what needs to change in order to get better results. They also know what a lot of their options look like. Not because they have spent their time on the Internet, but because your competitors have relentlessly called on them over the years, trying to nurture relationships. They have seen what’s available. If your dream client is 60+ percent through their buying cycle before they first communicate with a salesperson, it’s because they have some experience buying what you sell. This ain’t their first time at the rodeo. How You SellThis whole “Internet” thing seems to have some legs. There is no reason to pretend that it’s a fad or that it’s going away. You and your company should have a killer presence on the web, one that helps you acquire clients. But there isn’t any reason to pretend that there isn’t value to be created for your dream clients early in the process unless that value is housed on the Internet. This is criminal negligence. If you are going to win your dream clients, you need to get in front of their buying process.Getting in front of your client’s buying cycle means you prospect and nurture relationships. It means you need to help shape their needs, and you need to share ideas before your dream client is ever dissatisfied (creating value before claiming any). When you are out in front of an opportunity, you have the relationships, you are known, and you have a record of being a value creator. When your dream client decides to move, they are going to look at your website for sure. But you are already going to be invited in for the plain and simple fact that you haven’t gone away at any time during the three years they exclusively used your competitor. The real reason your dream client is deep into their buying process before they ever speak to a salesperson is because it’s not their first time buying. Sell like this is true and don’t fall behind the buying cycle. Instead, lead it.QuestionsIs the reason your clients are deep into their buying process because they have the Internet as a research tool? Or is it because they have bought enough times to be a sophisticated buyer? How does the fact that your buyer has some ideas about what they need when they decided to change effect the decisions you make about how to sell?If you really want your dream client to try something new, innovative, and disruptive, at what stage of the buying cycle do you want to approach them with your ideas?
