31 July 2013South Africa’s Black Business Council has thrown its weight behind the country’s long-term socio-economic development roadmap, the National Development Plan (NDP).A policy blueprint for eliminating poverty and reducing inequality in South Africa by 2030, the NDP identifies the key constraints to faster growth and presents a roadmap to a more inclusive economy that will address the country’s socio-economic imbalances. In a televised interview with the SABC on Tuesday, Black Business Council general secretary Sandile Zungu said the NDP gave South Africa, for the first time since the Freedom Charter, a guiding vision that could unite the country.Zungu told the SABC that the document was still “picture imperfect”, with various sectors have expressed “this or that concern” with it.However, the council, “as a collective of black business, is saying, ‘Let’s support this, let us make sure this economy grows at a sustainable level of six percent and more to create jobs and to enhance the competitiveness of our country for the prosperity of all.’”Zungu was speaking ahead of a conference, hosted by the Black Business Council in Johannesburg on Tuesday, on the role of black business in implementing the NDP.He said the organisation had identified a number of barriers to the entry of black businesses into the mainstream of the economy, including difficulties with access to capital, mentoring and training, and supply chains. These could be addressed, Zungu said, by the government acting as a partner to business through its development finance institutions. At the same time, the council urged big business to make small businesses part of their supply chains. It was also crucial that black businesses play a sizeable role in implementing the government’s infrastructure drive, Zungu said, noting that the Department of Public Enterprises was involved in Tuesday’s conference, where a number of ministers would be in attendance and Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel would be speaking. The NDP was approved by Cabinet late last year and adopted by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) at its elective conference in Mangaung in December.President Jacob Zuma, in his reply to the debate on the Presidency’s budget vote in Parliament in June, reiterated the government’s support for the NDP as South Africa’s “long-term socio-economic development roadmap”, saying the plan “ensures certainty with regards to the direction of the country in the next 20 years”.SAinfo reporter

Vine/Dan LyonsOklahoma’s Buddy Hield is this year’s Big 12 Player of the Year, and for good reason. The junior shooting guard does everything for the Sooners, and in tonight’s Round of 32 game against Dayton, that includes making a crucial block on a fast break lay-up attempt that could have cut the Oklahoma lead to two points. Dayton guard Darrell Davis stole the ball from OU’s Jordan Woodard, and immediately took off for the hoop. As he released the ball, Hield made a fantastic play to reject the shot out of his hand. Instead of a two-point game, Oklahoma was fouled and extended the lead.Oklahoma finished the game with a 72-66 win, and will face Michigan State in the Sweet 16 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY.

Around 300 Calgary cab drivers have signed a letter to the city, asking for ride sharing companies to be subject to the same rules and regulations as taxis. The petition says more and more cab drivers are being forced to give up on mortgage payments and file for bankruptcy as they struggle to make ends meet.Taxi driver Syed Hussain said one example is vehicle inspections: taxis must go in every six months, but for Uber drivers, it’s once every year.“When we renew our taxi badge, we pay $175, the Uber guys they pay $15,” he said.Hussain said added costs mean taxi drivers often work 12 hours a day, seven days a week.“We have over 2,000 drivers and they are suffering unbelievably,” he said.“There are double standards. Two laws: one for the tax industry and one for the sharing companies like Uber or Lyft or whatever, and that is not fair.”Meanwhile Clement Gulston, who drives for both ride-sharing companies Uber and Cowboy Taxi, argues he pays just as much as a taxi driver, maybe even more, as 25 per cent of fares go to the company to cover costs.“Their (taxi) system is outdated. Checker has apps, do you know that? Associated has (an) app, do you know that? Calgary City Cab has app? Have you ever tried to use their app, have you ever talked to anybody who tried to use their app? If you use any one of these apps, you’re not connected instantly with the driver,” he said.Gulston says he works for two companies driving four cars, not because he needs the money, but because he’s taking advantage of good opportunities. Should rideshare drivers (Uber, Lyft) face the same regulations as cab drivers?YesNoVoteView Results Take Our Poll
London: Vincent Kompany has hailed Manchester City teammate Raheem Sterling as one of the best players in the world after his 13-minute hat-trick in the 3-1 win against Watford. The victory at the Etihad on Saturday took the defending champions four points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table but Jurgen Klopp’s men closed the gap to a single point on Sunday. There was an offside debate over Sterling’s first goal and his second was a tap-in but his third highlighted his skill as he weaved into the area, cut back and fired past Ben Foster. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football together “It’s incredible because his first year at City was tough, and then from the moment Pep (Guardiola) came in he just kicked on and went from strength to strength,” said City captain Kompany. “For me, he is one of the best wingers in the world. He’s so important for us. To have the ability to unlock defences when they defend with so many bodies is the sign of a top, top, top player.” Sterling’s strikes shifted what had been a frustrating game decisively in City’s favour. As in their two previous games, the score was 0-0 at half-time and City, despite dominating possession, needed to work hard for openings. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian Open “These kind of games are much trickier than what people can see from the outside,” said Kompany, who has featured in City’s past five games. “It’s mentally demanding because it puts you to sleep that you have so much possession and are bouncing against the same wall.” City boss Pep Guardiola was more measured in his praise for Sterling, 24, who has now scored 20 goals for club and country this season. “He scored three goals, we’re delighted, but he can do better,” said Guardiola. “The first half was not the best performance from him, but it’s good when not playing at the top level to be consistent and score the three goals.” Guardiola hailed midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as an “incredible player in all senses” but again expressed concern over the German’s contract situation. The 28-year-old has not been an automatic starter under Guardiola and has just one season remaining on his present deal. Guardiola said: “I would prefer him to stay but at the same time I want to feel he wants to stay too. If he doesn’t want to stay, he has to leave.”
