Lee announced on Sept. 15.The building, located at 65 E. Huron St. on the Near North Side of Chicago, was built in 1967 and significantly renovated in 2012. The diocese spends $750,000 each year to maintain it, a figure that Lee called “increasingly unsustainable.”“Put simply, maintaining an underused diocesan headquarters in an expensive building on prime real estate is not good stewardship of diocesan assets,” he wrote in a letter to the people of the diocese. The proposed sale, which will be managed by Andrew Norman and Yolanda Valle of CBRE, will create a fund that would function like an endowment and be governed by the diocese’s Bishop and Trustees, an elected body of laypeople and clergy. “Such a fund would be transformative for your ministry with the next bishop of Chicago and for many decades to come,” said Lee, who will retire as the diocese’s bishop at the end of 2020, after the election of his successor on Dec. 12.The Bishop and Trustees, which holds title to the property, intends to invest a “meaningful portion” of the sale’s proceeds in affordable housing, said Lonn Myers, the body’s first vice president. “Selling 65 E. Huron would help secure the future of our diocese’s ministry and also let us continue and expand our decades-long commitment to funding affordable housing,” he said. “God calls us to share what we have been given and care for our neighbors.”Lee said that while the pandemic has confirmed his decision to offer the building for sale, he and the diocese’s leaders have been discussing the idea for nearly a year. It was slated to be sold when he took office in 2008, he said, but when that deal fell through, he sought to address “urgent maintenance and accessibility issues” by launching a fundraising campaign in 2011.“It was critical to our ministry together,” he wrote of the renovations. “But the world around us has shifted since then, and today we know that the building’s final gift to us can be to help assure the diocese’s long-term financial viability.”The property is expected to be offered for sale in 2021. “Today is the beginning of a long journey that we will finish with our next bishop,” Myers said. “But we will always be grateful to Bishop Lee for leading us through this decision, which we believe will bear fruit for our churches for decades to come.” Associate Rector for Family Ministries Anchorage, AK Remember Holy Land Christians on Jerusalem Sunday, June 20 American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem Course Director Jerusalem, Israel Posted Sep 15, 2020 Priest Associate or Director of Adult Ministries Greenville, SC Rector Tampa, FL Rector Smithfield, NC Ya no son extranjeros: Un diálogo acerca de inmigración Una conversación de Zoom June 22 @ 7 p.m. ET This Summer’s Anti-Racism Training Online Course (Diocese of New Jersey) June 18-July 16 Cathedral Dean Boise, ID Assistant/Associate Rector Morristown, NJ Curate (Associate & Priest-in-Charge) Traverse City, MI Virtual Celebration of the Jerusalem Princess Basma Center Zoom Conversation June 19 @ 12 p.m. ET Submit a Job Listing Curate Diocese of Nebraska Featured Events Rector Belleville, IL Rector Bath, NC Director of Administration & Finance Atlanta, GAlast_img read more

Defender hit with six year ban after breaching betting rules

first_img The Football Association has banned former Lincoln footballer Bradley Wood for six years and fined the defender £3,725, after he was found guilty of 25 betting related breaches. The two most damning charges which Wood denied, related to events that occurred during Lincoln’s memorable 2016‑17 FA Cup run, when the player was ruled to have purposely picked up two yellow cards, against Ipswich and against Burnley. In doing so, an FA tribunal ruled that Wood “influenced a football betting market” as two people known to the player placed bets on both matches that gambling operators flagged up as “atypical in the context of the caution betting market,” according to the FA’s written judgement. In its statement, the FA concluded: “The gravamen of the case against Mr Wood is that he planned to be cautioned, told personal acquaintances of that plan so that they and others to whom the information was passed placed bets.“The data supplied by betting organisations has revealed what is said to be unusual bets being placed on Mr Wood being cautioned in both matches. Two of those placing the bets are said to have close personal involvement with Mr Wood.“It is said that the bets were atypical in the context of the caution betting market, and in relation to the betting history of those placing the bets. The potential winnings (some were not paid) totalled approximately £10,000.”The FA also outlined that in the two matches a total of seven individuals made bets that Mr Wood would be cautioned, in each case those individuals’ bets were atypical both in relation to their personal betting history – none had previously placed bets in the caution betting market; and in relation to the caution betting market – the size of the bets made them stand out. Additionally, William Hill also revealed that they had never seen four figure sum being placed on the card market before, and Sky Bet revealed it was incredibly rare. The Chief executive of Lincoln, Liam Scully reacted to the FA’s decision: “This football club takes its own integrity, and the integrity of football as whole, extremely seriously so were shocked and saddened to be informed of the allegations.” He added: “We acted quickly when we were first informed and have, at the request of the FA and for the sake of Bradley Wood, kept the allegations private until the matter was resolved.“We wholeheartedly condemn any behaviour which could tarnish the reputation of football as a sport and have given the FA our complete support in conducting the investigation.“It is important to note, however, that these charges relate to the individual actions of a single player and it is accepted by everyone that they played no part in the results of games. We are relieved the matter has now been brought to a conclusion.”One of Wood’s key defences was that in the Ipswich game, he didn’t receive a booking until the 90th minute, adding that the foul was professional foul and was not one that sought out deliberately. The full written reasons of the Independent Regulatory Commission are available from the FA’s website. JSE launches International Derivatives

first_imgThomson said that in the past, participating in international markets was an onerous process with complex administrative and approval requirements. Offshore investing Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material Expanded list 5 November 2008 IDX plans to expand by including additional markets and companies over time, with futures on select US and Asian stocks, available from the first quarter of 2009. SAinfo reporter “We will hopefully list further derivatives products according to market appetite and we believe there will be great demand for these investment opportunities,” he said. The JSE has partnered with Deutsche Bank to launch International Derivatives (IDX), a new asset class that allows South African investors to trade single stock futures on internationally listed companies for the first time. “This is a new landmark in trading for the JSE,” JSE trading head Allan Thomson said in a statement this week. “For the first time, local investors will be able to gain exposure to international companies without dealing with an offshore bank or broker.” Thomson pointed out that individuals and corporate investors would not have any exchange control restrictions when trading International Derivatives on the JSE, though the fund management industry would have to comply with their foreign portfolio allowances. JSE derivatives specialist Magnus de Wet said that investing offshore played an important role in building a diversified investment portfolio. “The international companies being listed include companies from the oil and gal, telecommunications and pharmaceutical sectors,” he said. “This allows South African investors to further diversify their portfolios internationally, and in different industries.” Deutsche Bank will provide liquidity on futures over 21 top European companies, selected from both the FTSE 100 and DJ Eurostoxx 50 benchmark indices. The companies include major multinational corporations such as BP, GlaxoSmithKline, LVMH, Nokia and Vodafone. “In contrast, International Derivatives contracts can be traded through a JSE registered broker in the same way you would purchase any local derivatives product.” “This is an exciting initiative which provides SA investors convenient access to foreign markets” said Deutsche Securities equities head Max Koep. The contracts are priced and settled in South African rands, meaning that investors will benefit if the rand depreciates – and as such, De Wet anticipated that discerning investors would use International Derivatives as a rand hedge.last_img read more

Stay healthy while traveling when you can’t drink the water

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Karen Mancl, Professor Food, Agricultural & Biological EngineeringIt is a shame to get sick on vacation. Camping and hiking spots in remote areas may have unsanitary water supplies. Most importantly traveling outside the United States poses a risk to travelers, since water treatment is not as reliable in other countries. What can you do to protect yourself and your family from getting sick?Boil water before drinking is the standard recommendation. Boiling water for just a minute is extremely effective at killing bacteria and parasites that can make people sick. When is doubt – drink boiled water! Any heat source – electric or gas range, camp stove, wood fire and even a microwave oven – heats water to boiling temperatures and kills disease-causing microbes. What if you can’t boil the water? If boiling water might not be feasible. Other disinfection options are available.Disinfection tablets containing chlorine or iodine are available for campers and travelers to disinfect a small volume of water. Many different companies market disinfection tablets that can be easily added to water bottles. Always follow the directions on the package. Remember adding chemicals will change the taste of the water.Sunlight is an amazing disinfectant and is the key to solar disinfection (SODIS). The ultraviolet light in sunlight kills pathogens on contact. To use sunlight to disinfect water, the water must be very clear and placed in the sun in clear containers. Clear plastic water bottles and plastic bags can be used for solar disinfection. The water should be exposed to sunlight for at least 4 and up to 10 hours to kill microbes. So remember to be safe, boil water for 1 minute before drinking. If boiling is not possible, adding disinfection tablets works to clean water. However, adding chemicals to water changes its taste and while safe, may not be palatable. Disinfecting batches of water in the sun is a low energy, non-chemical solution when traveling or camping. To find out more about water testing and disinfection check the website for the Ohio State University Soil Environment Technology Learning Lab at setll.osu.edu.last_img read more

Local Continuing Education Classes Now Included in Everyblock

first_imgmarshall kirkpatrick Tags:#Location#news#web Related Posts Everyblock, the data-driven hyper-local news website covering 16 US cities, announced today that it has added continuing education listings from the website TeachStreet to its newsfeed. Now you can learn when there are new cooking or violin classes in your neighborhood, side-by-side with news of police activity, restaurant reviews and news stories about your area. I love Everyblock and haven’t paid enough attention to TeachStreet before, it looks good too. MSNBC owns Everyblock and it’s an invaluable service, but each time a new data source gets added, a fundamental flaw in the user interface rears its head again. None the less, this is an exciting dataset to see added to the hyper-local news. It’s too hard to exclude particular types of updates from your newsfeed. There ought to be a way to say “show me restaurant reviews, media reports, TeachStreet listings and police activities, but not fire alarms or traffic stops.” I really believe that increased granularity would greatly increase the frequency with which I and many other people visited Everyblock. The prospect of surfacing continuing education courses in my neighborhood is quite exciting.
