Avengers midnight screening exposed to worst villain of all Measles

first_img How to watch every Marvel Cinematic Universe film in the right order 26 Photos Top 5 things Avengers: Endgame sets up for the future Captain America (Chris Evans) looks very angry in Avengers: Endgame. Video screenshot by Bonnie Burton/CNET The United States is currently in the midst of the worst measles outbreak since 1994, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the number of cases continues to rise across the country.According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, local authorities are warning people that attended a midnight screening of Avengers: Endgame at the AMC Theater in Fullerton, California on April 25 may have been exposed to the disease. A woman in her 20s who attended the screening is the first confirmed case reported in Orange County. The film had the most successful opening weekend in box office history, so you can be sure it was seen by a lot of people. The Orange County Health Care Agency suggests anyone present at the theater at the time may be at risk of infection and should check their vaccination history and monitor themselves for fever or unexplained rash for up to three weeks. The measles virus is known to spread through the air and can persist in the environment even after an infectious person leaves the area. The CDC notes that three counties in California have recorded measles outbreaks since the start of 2019 and 22 US states have reported cases overall. As of writing, 704 cases of measles have been reported in 2019. At the current rate, reported cases in the US are likely to reach their highest number since 1992, when cases topped out at 2,200.measles1graphEnlarge ImageMeasles cases in the US since 1993. Corporate governance in shambles with Ratan Tata Narayana Murthy locking horns with

first_imgRatan Tata and N.R. Narayana MurthyReutersCorporate governance took the centre stage in India with two iconic organisations going through the worst of times. Tata Sons and Infosys have been in the news for past one year 10 months for all the wrong reasons. In separate instances, both the companies’ boardroom tussles became public, which for sure shouldn’t have happened with companies having huge brand value. In both the instances, promoters and founders, Ratan Tata for Tata Sons and N.R. Narayana Murthy for Infosys, were in the epicentre of the corporate storm. For Tata Sons, it all began at Bombay House with the ouster of Cyrus Mistry as the chairman in October last year, resulting in Ratan Tata taking over as the interim chairman of Tata Sons.Questions were raised on how Mistry was running the Tata Group and he had been criticised for taking certain strategic decisions. The tussle became murkier and led to a slew of allegations and counter-allegations. Finally, the Mistry-Tata battle landed in the courtrooms.Mind you, the war is not yet over. It was only yesterday when the Board of Tata Sons, under the chairmanship of N Chandrasekaran, has ordered its group to snap all ties with Cyrus and elder brother Shapoor Mistry owned SP Group. Currently, SP Group holds about 18.4 percent stake in Tata Sons.In the Infosys story, co-founder and former CEO and present Chairman Emeritus, Narayana Murthy, publicly expressed his unhappiness over the current management. CEO Vishal Sikka flagging issues like higher compensation to executives, acquisition strategy and appointment of independent directors were not well received by him. After months of letter exchanges and press interviews, Vishal Sikka on Friday morning stepped down from the position of CEO and managing director of Infosys. While the Tatas chose to remove Mistry, in the case of Infosys, the situation forced Sikka to step down. In his personal blog, Sikka wrote:For days, indeed weeks, this decision has weighed on me. I have wrestled the pros and cons, the issues and the counterbalancing arguments. But now, after much thought, and considering the environment of the last few quarters, I am clear in my decision. It is clear to me that despite our successes over the last three years, and the powerful seeds of innovation that we have sown, I cannot carry out my job as CEO and continue to create value, while also constantly defending against unrelenting, baseless/malicious and increasingly personal attacks.Days earlier, former Chief Financial Officer of Infosys, T V Mohandas Pai, pitched for the return N R Narayana Murthy as Chairman Emeritus, by saying the move will improve the brand and showcase high corporate governance standards. In both the occasions, the irony is, Ratan Tata and Narayana Murthy handpicked their respective successors, and issued happy notes while offering their appointments. An important question pops up here. Do the owners/founders have to question every move of their successors when they are running the business just because the former have diligently built the company over many summers?last_img read more

As Fewer Refugees Settle In Houston Nonprofits Struggle To Maintain Operations

first_img Listen Photo: Courtesy of The AllianceA young refugee mother poses with her children at The Alliance’s spring festival held at the Arab American Cultural and Community Center in Houston. The Alliance of Houston is historically one of the largest refugee resettlement organizations in Texas. Before Trump took office, the nonprofit resettled roughly 750 refugee families a year. Then the president lowered the cap for refugee admissions, and The Alliance was contracted to take in some 450 families over the course of a year. But Alliance CEO Dan Stoecker said he doubts is organization will even reach that number. He said if refugee resettlement continues at its current rate, he estimates end-of-year numbers somewhere in the 200 range. “When the numbers aren’t even half now of even what the government promised that we should count on,” said Stoecker, “it makes it very difficult for all the non-profit agencies in Houston and across America to really have stable business operations.”Stoecker said when the government doesn’t send families to resettle, his organization loses out on the reimbursements they were anticipating. He’s having to adjust budgets, programs and staffing to balance the organization’s budget. 00:00 /00:55 X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code:center_img Stoecker said he’s disappointed by the administration’s cap to refugee resettlement and is considering offering assistance abroad as an alternative way to address the refugee crisis. “This is the biggest refugee crisis in history, but at the same time America isn’t really doing its equal part,” Stoecker said.  Sharelast_img read more

PCB rules out immediate return of tainted duo

first_imgThe Pakistan Cricket Board has ruled out an immediate first-class return for the tainted duo of Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif, saying that they would have to attend further anti-corruption rehabilitation programs to regain the PCB’s trust.Najam Sethi, Chairman of the PCB’s influential executive committee, said the Board had planned special rehabilitation programs for the two players whose spot-fixing bans expire on September 1, allowing them to return to cricket. Sethi revealed that there were lots of players including some members of the Pakistan team, who were not happy that Butt, Asif or Mohammad Aamir should be rehabilitated back to top cricket. “I don’t think they have to go into first class cricket straightaway when the ban ends. They will have to attend the rehabilitation program of the PCB for two to three months,” Sethi said on Geo Super channel. “We had written to the ICC seeking clarification on some points and they have in reply left it to the PCB to complete the rehabilitation process of these players.” Also Read – A league of his own!Asked about the players who were not happy to see the tainted trio coming back, Sethi declined to take names but said even former Test captain Ramiz Raja had mentioned this in a recent column. “Obviously we have to talk to these players, convince them and give them time to develop trust once again in the players coming back. The PCB itself needs to be very sure that they wouldn’t repeat the past because what happened in 2010 in England was very embarrassing and damaging for Pakistan cricket,” Sethi said.  Also Read – Domingo named new Bangladesh cricket coachPCB to launch logo of long-awaited PSL next monthThe Pakistan Cricket Board said it would launch the official logo of its much-delayed Twenty20 Super League on September 19. A top official, however, said a decision on the venue for hosting the five-team franchise tournament would be taken in two weeks time.“We have two options either hold the PSL as planned in February in Doha or wait until April and host it in Dubai and other venues in the UAE,” he said. He said a recent visit to Dubai to meet the officials there to discuss the use of venues had failed to yield results since in February the Masters championship was being held in Dubai. “They have given us the option of hosting it in April. Our delegation also went to Qatar where their national Olympic committee and cricket association were very welcoming and keen to host the PSL.“Qatar is staging major international events now but cricket has remained out of their calendar but now they want cricket as well and their officials assured us they would offer all cooperation and help to make the PSL a big success in Qatar,” the official said. “Their Olympic committee and cricket association also told us they have got government permission to have the PSL with us,” he said. The PCB official also ruled out any chances of the PSL being put off for a third time in three years’ time.last_img read more

Pros and cons of consuming ecigarettes

first_imgEvidence has suggested that increased use of e-cigarette can dramatically decrease cigarette smoking among youth and young adults, the researchers said, adding that vaping is likely to provide positive health benefits that outweigh the harm. “E-cigarettes can provide the potential to reduce harm and also improve the public health if used as an alternative to cigarette smoking,” said lead author David Levy, Professor at Georgetown University in Washington, US. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’However, these e-cigarettes can also increase the harm if people become smokers as a direct consequence of first trying e-cigarettes, the researchers warned. The “recent claims by some scientists that e-cigarettes are likely to act as a gateway to the use of tobacco products are overstated,” Levy added. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently banned the use of e-cigarettes by youth younger than 18, said the paper published in the journal ‘Nicotine & Tobacco Research’.”We want to discourage use of all nicotine and cigarette products,” Levy said, supporting the move.Despite the estimates of an overall public health benefit from e-cigarettes, use of these products in youths needs to be continuously monitored, since use patterns are likely to change as the product and awareness about the product changes, the researchers concluded.last_img read more
