— Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, October 26, 2017 – Nassau – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest says the government is convinced that the health and strength of Grand Bahama’s economy is vital to the nation’s overall growth and development.“I can’t stress that enough because people don’t necessarily understand how important Grand Bahama is to the entire health of this country, because it is still the second largest economy in the country, never mind that Abaco is gaining on our heels every day and other islands like Exuma are holding their own,” added Minister Turnquest, who was the guest speaker at the 12th Annual Northern Conference of The Bahamas Association of Compliance Officers, which was held at Pelican Bay Resort, October 25, 2017.“If (Grand Bahama’s economy) fails, it will cause enormous pressure on the rest of the country,” added Minister Turnquest. “So, I can’t understate how important it is for us to get Grand Bahama right.”In his address to Compliance Officers, Minister Turnquest said his government feels it has an obligation to do what it can to ensure that Grand Bahama succeeds. He said that is just the first step in delivering on the commitments the government has made to the people of Grand Bahama and for the people of The Bahamas.“The economic transformation of Grand Bahama requires growth,” said Minister Thompson. “According to the IMF World outlook, The Bahamas is forecasted to grow by 1.8 percent in 2017 and by 2.5 percent in 2018. However, that growth will not happen and be sustained if the government does not do its part to facilitate economic transformation.“And again, getting Grand Bahama’s economy going is a key, critical component to achieving those goals. In fact, the country cannot progress without undertaking reforms that lead to better business conditions. These reforms are critical to achieve better living standards, moderate inflation, low inflationary concerns and high growth rates.”The Finance Minister noted that The Bahamas fell in its rankings on the “ease of doing business” ladder since last year and to a large extent that fall was not because of something the Bahamian government did, but rather what they did not do.“In other words, if we continue to stand still, thinking that we are doing okay, we are going to fall further and further behind because the rest of the world is moving forward,” Minister Thompson pointed out. “For example, Jamaica has made tremendous strides in its utilization of technology in order to facilitate and make the ease of doing business much better. And they have leap-frogged ahead of us.“We have an obligation and we have a commitment to make the improvements, to make the changes that we need to make in order to ensure that we keep pace, at a minimum. But I challenge my people every day to make a quantum leap to ensure that we get ahead.”By: Andrew Coakley (BIS)OPENS BACO CONFERENCE – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. K. VfB Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez revealed why he chose to join Fiorentina instead of either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in 2013.After falling behind Mario Mandzukic in the Bayern Munich pecking order, Gomez decided to end his four-year stay at the Allianz Arena after scoring 113 goals in 174 games along with winning two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League. The former Germany international had the choice of going to Spain with either Real or Atletico but instead made a surprise €20m transfer to Fiorentina in the Serie A.Gomez made the decision to turn down, what many would view as a once in a lifetime opportunity, both Real and Atletico in favour of Fiorentina due to a new-found desire to be the “hunter” once more after having so much success at Bayern.“At the time, I relatively quickly made the decision to join Fiorentina,” Gomez told Bild.“However, my agent, Uli Ferber, kept telling me that the Spanish top clubs Real and Atlético Madrid also asked about me.Zidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.“Two days before the end of the pre-season training camp with Bayern, he asked me if he should really say no to them.“From a sporting point of view, that may not be understandable to many people. But Fiorentina showed me exactly which way they wanted to go.“With a high-quality team and a new stadium, they wanted to compete with Juventus in the long run.”“After four years at Bayern München, the thought of being in the position as the hunters attracted me and ultimately made me want to make the move.”Ultimately though Gomez’s time in Italy didn’t turn out the way he had hoped for with just 14 goals to his name in 47 appearances before going out on loan to Turkish side Besiktas and leaving permanently in 2016 for VfL Wolfsburg. At the age of 33, Gomez returned to his boyhood club Stuttgart last January.

UK court orders extradition of Vijay Mallya Apparently stung by high profile flight from the country of several economic offenders, premier crime investigative agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a lookout circular (LOC) against top banker Chanda Kochhar, who is being probed over alleged fraud during her tenure as the chief executive officer and managing director of ICICI Bank.Apart from Chanda Kochhar, the lookout notices also include her husband Deepak Kochhar, and Videocon Group’s Venugopal Dhoot. The development comes weeks after Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a criminal case against them for alleged money laundering, according to media reports. The CBI and the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had taken opposition flak over the flight aboard of several top businessmen including liquor baron Vijay Mallya and diamond merchants Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi. Facing the general election in a matter of weeks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government can ill-afford to face another embarrassing flight in a high profile economic offence investigation. The CBI last year issued lookout circulars at all airports against Deepak Kochhar and Dhoot last year. The Economics Times reports this is the first time LOC has been issued against Chanda Kochhar.”LOCs were filed after the FIR and are mandatory in cases where such economic offences are alleged. In recent times, keeping an eye on travel plans is a top concern for regulators,” the newspaper quoted an official as saying.ED registered a criminal case for alleged money laundering against the Kochhars, Dhoot, and others, to probe alleged irregularities and corrupt practices in sanctioning a Rs 1,875-crore loan to the corporate group.ED filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, taking into account a CBI complaint filed last month. An ECIR is the ED’s equivalent of a police first information report (FIR). Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with Chanda Kochhar, managing director and chief executive officer of ICICI Bank at the inauguration of 100 Digital Villages in New Delhi on May 2, 2017.IANSThe agency is probing the possibility of amassing tainted assets from any kickbacks the loan deal might have generated. The ED is expected to summon the accused named in the ECIR soon, according to reports.Allegations of conflict of interest against the CEO first arose in October 2016 following the ICICI Bank’s sanctioning of a loan to the Videocon Group. The allegation was that though Kochhar’s husband had alleged beneficial business dealings with Videocon managing director Venugopal Dhoot, yet the bank CEO continued to function on the credit committee that sanctioned the loan in 2012.An ICICI Bank inquiry found that Kochhar violated the bank’s code of conduct and its board decided to treat her October resignation – tendered while she was on leave – as a termination. Kochhar said she was “utterly disappointed, hurt and shocked” by the decision.
