The European General Courts ruling annulling Libe

first_imgThe European General Court’s ruling annulling Liberty Global and Vodafone-Ziggo’s joint venture in the Netherlands is “more of a nuisance” than a major blow for Liberty Global, according to the company’s president and CEO Mike Fries. Fries said he was “pretty confident” the deal would be cleared “in due course”.The ruling means that the European Commission has to re-examine its original approval of the VodafoneZiggo JV to take account of the court’s finding that it didn’t provide a proper analysis of the impact of the deal on the premium sports market.Fries said that both Telenet and VodafoneZiggo had shown that synergies from fixed-mobile convergence were “real” and “probably bigger than we thought”. He said that fixed-mobile convergence and a quad-play bundle were “huge drivers of growth and value creation”. However, he said, a standalone mobile offering that is not converged was “challenging”, given the competitive nature of that business and regulatory headwinds.Speaking about regulation more broadly, Fries said that “battle lines” were being drawn over the implementation of the EC’s new electronic communications code and in particular over how much authority would be vested in national regulators to interpret the rules.Fries said that Liberty was “totally aligned with the EU Commission” and with other telcos in viewing existing regulations as sufficient, but wonted that the European Parliament and Council were “grappling with their own interpretations” of the code.last_img read more

ABC NEWS No one likes to be cold enough to shiv

first_img (ABC NEWS)- No one likes to be cold enough to shiver, but what if being cold could actually increase your metabolism, improve blood sugar and help you lose weight?A study done on mice at the University of Tokyo supports this idea. The researchers found that a certain type of cells called beige fat can actively break down fat and sugar to improve insulin sensitivity and increase metabolism. Beige fat was also found to help regulate energy balance.Where do these fat cells come from? Exposure to cold for long periods of time can “stress” the body into turning the bad fat that most people have into good fat. Shivering creates body heat short-term by warming up the muscles. In a long-term process called thermogenesis, brown fat cells create heat to keep the body warm. When you are cold for a long enough time, the white fat cells are forced to start acting like brown fat. This protein, JMJD1A becomes altered to JMJD1A and this white cells becomes a beige cell, which is thermogenic. Next PostGino’s Top 5 Plays Home NewsWatch Can Being Cold Help You Loose Weight? first_imgSponsor Advertisement Bayfield Ventures Corp. (TSX.V: BYV) is exploring for gold and silver in the Rainy River District of NW Ontario. The Company’s 100% owned “Burns” Block property adjoins the immediate east of Rainy River Resources’ (TSX.V: RR) world-class gold deposit which includes an indicated resource of 5.72 million ounces of gold, averaging 1.18 g/t, in addition to an inferred resource of 2.25 million ounces of gold, averaging 0.79 g/t. Drilling to date on Bayfield’s Burns Block demonstrates that the ODM17gold zone extends from Rainy River Resources’ ground onto the Burns Block. Bayfield is currently carrying out 100,000 metres of diamond drilling on its Rainy River properties. Drill results thus far have been very encouraging. Notable drill results include 60.05 grams per tonne gold and 362.96 grams per tonne silver over 11.2 metres within 26.70 grams per tonne gold and 170.69 grams per tonne silver over 25.5 metres, as well as 35.93 grams per tonne gold and 359.65 grams per tonne silver over 10.0 metres. Bayfield also holds a 100% interest in two other properties in the Rainy River District. Claim blocks “B” and “C” are well located to the immediate east and west (respectively) of Rainy River Resources’ #433 and ODM17 gold zones. Please visit our website to learn more about the company and request information. We get the jobs numbers at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time this morning…and it’s always interesting to see how the precious metals react. It was nice to see gold finally break above the $1,780 spot price mark, even if it was only by a bit over ten bucks.  Looking at the Kitco gold chart from yesterday, it’s easy to see that the gold price ran into stiff resistance at every significant rally attempt…the London open, the Comex open…and the Comex close.  Without a willing seller present at these key times, gold would have finished the day substantially higher. As it turned out, gold finished the Thursday trading session at $1,790.30 spot…up $11.30 on the day.  Not surprisingly, volume…172,000 contracts…was significantly higher [by 40,000 contracts] than Wednesday’s volume, as the technical funds and small traders poured in on the long side…and JPMorgan et al went short against all comers.Of course the most egregious…and equally obvious…price management target of the day, was silver.  Every attempt to break through the $35 spot price ceiling was bludgeoned to death once again…especially the break out at the 8:20 a.m. Eastern time Comex open.Silver’s high tick of the day…$35.23 spot…occurred less than ten minutes after the Comex open…and was immediately followed by silver’s low price tick in New York…$34.57 spot less than twenty minutes later.  If you can explain to me why any for-profit seller would sell into a NASA space-launch rally like this…and drive the price down about 50 cents at the same time…I’d LOVE to hear from you, and why you would trade like this yourself.Silver was carefully closed at $34.97 spot, just below the $35 mark…up 33 cents on the day…but would have been up many dollars if left to its own devices. Here’s the New York Spot Silver [Bid] chart on its own.  It highlights all the New York shenanigans more closely.Gold finished up 0.64%…silver finished up 0.95%…platinum was up 1.84%…and palladium was the star, up 2.91%.The dollar index opened at 79.89 on Thursday morning in early Far East trading…just after making what looked like its final two attempts to break above the 80.00 level in late afternoon trading on Wednesday afternoon in New York.It was all down hill from there…and the decline picked up speed shortly after 12 o’clock noon in London…and the bottom came at precisely 2:00 p.m. in New York, where it looked like someone caught a falling knife. From there, the index traded sideways, closing at 79.36…down 53 basis points on the day…and was down over 60 basis points at one point. It should be obvious that gold and silver wanted to really fly on this dollar index price decline, but there were willing not-for-profit sellers in the market ensuring that the obvious didn’t happen. The gold stocks gapped up about a percent at the open…and continued to work their way higher from there…right up until shortly after the 1:30 p.m. Eastern Comex close.  From there they traded sideways…and the HUI finished up a respectable 2.67%.For the most part, the silver stocks did exceptionally well…and Nick Laird’s Silver Sentiment Index closed up 3.49%.(Click on image to enlarge)The CME’s Daily Delivery Report showed that 192 gold and 16 silver contracts were posted for delivery on Monday.  The only two short/issuers were Merrill and ABN Amro, with 150 and 42 contracts respectively.  Two of the ‘usual suspects’ were the long/stoppers…JPMorgan with 145 contracts and the Bank of Nova Scotia with 47.  The link to yesterday’s Issuers and Stoppers Report is here.I was somewhat taken aback by the report from GLD yesterday, as an authorized participant[s] added 290,802 troy ounces of gold.  In the first four business days of October, GLD has added 407,126 ounces of the stuff…even though the gold price has hardly moved.SLV did not have a report yesterday…but since the beginning of October, the amount of silver in SLV has declined by 174,134 troy ounces…and silver’s price has hardly moved, either. After three days with no sales report, the U.S. Mint decided to come clean on its October activity to date.  They reported selling 7,000 ounces of gold eagles…2,500 one-ounce 24K gold buffaloes…and a chunky 1,233,000 silver eagles…almost 38% of all the silver eagles reported sold in the entire month of September.  As I keep pounding away in this space…I hope, dear reader, that you are getting your share! The Comex-approved depositories only took in one good delivery bar on Wednesday.  It tipped the scales at 999.130 troy ounces.  But they shipped 848,266 troy ounces out the door.  The link to that activity is here.I have the usual number of stories today and, as always, the final edit is up to you.The effect of QE3 is nothing more than pushing up the stock market…the market is being pushed up to record levels with limited trading. We have a very low volume and the market goes up, which is manipulation. – Sam Zell, CEO of Equity Group Investments on CNBC on October 3, 2012It was just another day of blatant price management in the precious metals…with gold and silver getting it in the neck once again from JPMorgan et al.One thing is for sure, is that the total open interest and the Commercial net short position are getting larger by the day, as it was obvious that the “usual LBMA suspects” were going short against all and sundry on both sides of the Atlantic again yesterday.Today’s Commitment of Traders Report certainly won’t show what happened on Wednesday and Thursday…and in some ways this COT report is already “yesterday’s news” when you consider the price activity since the cut-off on Tuesday afternoon.  I suspect that “da boyz” will continue to short this market until they break its back. But, there’s still the chance that JPMorgan et al will get over run.  However, there’s certainly no sign of that happening at the moment.  If this happy event does occur, I’m sure that Jamie Dimon et al won’t be advertising that fact in advance. We get the jobs numbers at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time this morning…and it’s always interesting to see how the precious metals react…or are allowed to react.  I await this event with the usual amount of interest.Gold and silver rose and fell during the Far East trading session on their Friday…and were about unchanged as I hit the ‘send’ button at 5:19 a.m. Eastern time.  Volumes were very light, so I wouldn’t read a thing into what little price movements we’ve had in either metal up to that point in time. The dollar index is comatose. With gold and silver shares continuing to move higher with some conviction now, there’s still an opportunity to either readjust your portfolio, or get fully invested in the continuing major up-leg of this bull market in both silver and gold…and I respectfully suggest that you take out a trial subscription to either Casey Research‘s International Speculator [junior gold and silver exploration companies], or BIG GOLD [large producers], with all our best [and current] recommendations…as well as the archives. Don’t forget that our 90-day guarantee of satisfaction is in effect for both publications.I’m done for the day.  See you here tomorrow.last_img read more

While the market goes gaga for technology companie

first_imgWhile the market goes gaga for technology companies, bidding their prices to levels assuming constant growth to infinity, I wonder just how new apps or viewing devices make my life better versus things created years ago. In a wonderful little book full of big insights, The Great Stagnation, economist Tyler Cowen says our lives in material terms are not much different than in 1953. The cool stuff we saw on The Jetsons in the 1960s hasn’t happened. No jetpacks, or living forever, or visiting Mars. “Life is better and we have more stuff,” writes Cowan, “but the pace of change has slowed down compared to what people saw two or three generations ago.” Market bellwethers like Amazon and Netflix are astronomically valued. But these companies do not change our lives fundamentally—they only allow us to efficiently buy and watch more STUFF. It’s inventions made between 1880 and 1940 that have really made life better. Professor Cowan lists a few important ones: automobiles, electricity, household appliances, telephone, mass production, pharmaceuticals, radio, television, and indoor plumbing. Younger readers can’t imagine a world without these things. I can’t either, except for indoor plumbing. Although I grew up living in Abilene, Kansas, with indoor plumbing, I remember visiting great-grandparents who did not have modern facilities. These days you think the world’s going to end if the Internet is slow. Imagine having to go in the middle of a cold, windy Kansas night. You put on shoes and an overcoat, and tromped out to an uninsulated, rickety outhouse 50 or 100 yards from the residence. In the summer, a different sort of discomfort was associated with the process. So while I’m awed by the latest gadgets like anyone else and a proud Amazon Prime member, I don’t think Jeff Bezos’ company is life-changing enough for the stock to be worth 539 times earnings. As I get older, it is those who designed and created indoor plumbing that I thank each and every night. Which brings me to today’s article by resource investing legend Rick Rule of Sprott Global Resources. Many of you know him as the go-to wise man for junior resource companies in the precious metals and energy areas. Today he has another precious resource he believes you should consider for your portfolio… a resource none of us can do without, no matter what neat technology we hold in our hands. Rick not only lays out an ironclad investment thesis, but provides specific investment ideas. You can read more from Rick and his team at Sprott’s Thoughts. GREENBURGH NY — Three days after squandering a

first_imgGREENBURGH, N.Y. — Three days after squandering a chance to reach the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight season, the New York Rangers’ disappointment and frustration was still there for all to see. They not only failed to score with the final just 20 minutes away in Game 7 at Madison Square Garden against the Tampa Bay Lightning May 29, they allowed two goals in a 2-0 loss. They played a horrible period with hockey’s biggest prize on the horizon. And it hurt. Players were still confused June 1 as the team gathered for their end-of-season meetings with coach Alain Vigneault at their Westchester training facility. This was the team that posted the NHL’s best regular-season record. The team that had home-ice advantage. The group that felt this was its year to win the Cup.It was all there for the taking, and they didn’t take it.“It has been tough to sleep the past few nights, just thinking about the players we have,” said Rick Nash, who scored 42 goals. “It’s one of the best teams I have ever played on. It’s been a really frustrating two days to try to digest this feeling.”Even Vigneault was at a loss after meeting with his players, insisting the lingering emotions made it impossible for him to put some perspective on the season that saw the Rangers post a franchise-record 113 points. The loss was so bad that Vigneault said his 22-year-old daughter, Janie, sobbed uncontrollably for hours after the game. This was supposed to be the Rangers’ year. This was supposed to be the season they brought the Cup back to New York for the first time since 1994.They lost the finals in five games to the Kings last season, but they were in every game. After losing Anton Stralman and Brian Boyle to free agency in the offseason, there were question marks early in the season, but youngsters like Kevin Hayes, J.T. Miller, Jesper Fast, Cam Talbot and young veterans like Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider and Derick Brassard stepped up, and this team discovered it could win again and again. The confidence only grew during the season and it seemed to reach a high when they rallied from a 3-1 deficit against Washington in the conference semifinals.“Last year we were even closer and it was tough the way it ended in overtime,” goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, 34, said. “But with the group we had this year, and I think the skill and determination we also had, it’s disappointing to come up short.”The Rangers, who have played in the conference finals three of the past four years, still have a young team and their window of opportunity to hold The Cup. The only major unrestricted free agent is Martin St. Louis, who will turn 40 in a couple of weeks. The fact that he hinted at his age might indicate that he will consider retiring.Stepan, Fast, Miller and Carl Hagelin are all restricted free agents, with Stepan in line to get a big contract.“We know we’ve played a lot of good hockey over the last four years,” Stepan said. “We’ve just got to find that extra push to pass over the hump to the next step.”Vigneault said that what made him proudest this season was that his team showed up every game and worked.“We have been knocking at the door. We’re getting close to the hump and we’re almost ready to get over,” he said. “If you ask me do I believe in this group: My answer is yes.”His players feel the same way.“We keep the team together we are going to have a chance every year,” defenseman Dan Girardi said. “The way the team is built, we have hankie in net, a great D corps and great forwards, so we’re set up to do some good long runs.”The question is whether the Rangers can take those last steps next season. “It’s been something that I have been dreaming about for a long time,” Lundqvist said.(TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

GENEVA AP — UEFA vice president Angel Maria Vill

first_imgGENEVA (AP) — UEFA vice president Angel Maria Villar, who is being held in jail in Spain on suspicion of corruption, has resigned from the European soccer body.In a statement on Thursday, UEFA said Villar offered his resignation a day earlier “as vice president of UEFA and member of the UEFA Executive Committee with immediate effect.”It was unclear if Villar also formally resigned as the senior vice president of FIFA representing UEFA member federations. FIFA said it couldn’t immediately confirm if Villar had resigned his position at the world body.Villar was arrested in Spain last week in an investigation into suspected corruption connected to his position as president of the Spanish football federation. His son, Gorka Villar, was also among the four soccer officials arrested.Spain’s government suspended the 67-year-old Angel Maria Villar from the national federation presidency for one year on Tuesday. An interim replacement was appointed Wednesday.Villar was elected to the UEFA executive committee 25 years ago, and was its top official for nearly a year in 2015-16 while then-president Michael Platini was suspended from duty by FIFA.UEFA said its president Aleksander Ceferin accepted Villar’s letter of resignation Wednesday and “thanked him for his many years of service to European football.”“In view of the on-going court proceedings in Spain, we have no further comments to make on this matter,” UEFA said in a brief statement.UEFA members could replace Villar at a scheduled election meeting in Geneva on Sept. 20.Villar and his son were denied bail last week and transferred from a police jail to the Soto del Real prison near Madrid after being questioned by a judge. The judge cited flight risks after detailing how Villar allegedly misappropriated private and public funds while president of Spain’s federation “at least since 2009.”Prosecutors allege that Villar used his influence to funnel private and public funds into regional federations in exchange for votes to remain in power for eight consecutive terms. He is also suspected of using his control of the television rights for Spain’s friendly matches to secure economic benefits for his son, a sports lawyer who has worked for South American soccer body CONMEBOL under three presidents who were all implicated in corruption cases. As head of Spain’s soccer federation for almost three decades, Villar also was a board member of the Spanish national Olympic committee.GRAHAM DUNBAR, AP Sports WriterTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Now, how that headline just made you feel is probably dependent on the length of your mixed martial arts fandom. Unfortunately, for those that joined the party within the last five years, it likely doesn’t mean much. Just an overrated Strikeforce guy who’s done crushing cans overseas and deciding to call it quits. And that’s a shame, because for me, writing that headline probably was harder than it should’ve been. I’ll save the dramatics for when the time comes, but I have to admit, the spectacle of Pride FC and the legend of Fedor Emelianenko was one of the early catalysts that endeared me to this sport. I’m sure I’m not alone, either. Through the tinted lenses of nostalgia, it’s impossible to articulate how special that time was to someone who didn’t live and breathe it.But now the mythical figure is gone, replaced by a 35-year-old shell whose delinquent management relegated him to near-irrelevance. Each time he fights the Satoshi Ishiis and Pedro Rizzos of the world, it gets a little tougher to remember the wars with Big Nog or the hysteria against Cro Cop. And perhaps Fedor knows that.”I think it’s time to call it a day,” he repeated at a press conference this week in Russia (translation via Rianovosti). “This fight may be my last one.”If it is, maybe we’ll see one last flash of the greatness that left us dumbstruck so many times before. But even if we don’t, it was a privilege to watch that man dominate at the highest level for nearly a decade.5 MUST-READ STORIESFedor Emelianenko may retire. He’s boring, predictable, and has a huge weakness in the 170 division with getting taken down. He has no future whatsoever at that weight class and 155 is even more stacked.
